A prototype is a cognitive reference point, i.e the proto-image of all representatives of the meaning of a word or of a category. Thus, a robin or a sparrow can be regarded as a prototype or a "good example" of the category bird, whereas a penguin or an ostrich is a rather "bad example" of this category. Accordingly, the members of a category can be graded according to their typicality. Prototype Theory is a model of graded categorization in Cognitive Science, where all members of a category do not have equal status. For example, chair is more prototypical of the concept furniture, than, say, lamp.

The whole point of Prototype Theory is that regular thinking isn't about features, or boundaries, or whatever. We normally categorise by similarity to the exemplars/prototypes. And your examples definitely don't show why features are better .

Prototype theory semantics

Things belong in the category in virtue of their sharing of commonalities with the prototype. Prototype theory refers to this view on the nature of categories. This article examines the role of prototypes in semantics, especially in lexical semantics.

1 Prototype view is a product of cognitive psychology of the 1970s mainly due to Rosch’s ground breaking Main article: Conceptual semantics This theory is an effort to explain properties of argument structure. The assumption behind this theory is that syntactic properties of phrases reflect the meanings of the words that head them.

Prototype theory semantics

(3) Prototype are primarily used in lexical semantics for discussing nouns, such as in cognitive psychology and prepositions in Indo-European languages, and (4) Unlike in cognitive psychology, prototype has exhibited an extended use and application in areas of phonology, syntax and diachronic lexical semantics. The whole point of Prototype Theory is that regular thinking isn't about features, or boundaries, or whatever. We normally categorise by similarity to the exemplars/prototypes.
